MANILA, Philippines – Team Philippines went home empty-handed for the second straight Paralympics, but the six-strong delegation made a good account of themselves in the global showdown for differently-abled athletes.
Here is how the Filipino para athletes fared in the Paris Paralympics:
Cendy Asusano (para athletics)
- placed fourth in the women’s javelin throw F54, notching the highest finish out of the six Filipino representatives in Paris
- nailed a new personal best of 15.05 meters, marking the first time she breached the 15-meter mark
- debuted in the Paralympics
Angel Otom (para swimming)
- advanced to the finals of her two events
- clocked a new personal best of 45.78 seconds for fifth place in the women’s 50m butterfly S5
- finished sixth in the women’s 50m backstroke S5
- debuted in the Paralympics
Ernie Gawilan (para swimming)
- placed sixth in the men’s 400m freestyle S7, replicating his finish in the Tokyo Paralympics three years ago
- missed the cut for the final of the men’s 200m medley SM7
- competed in the Paralympics for the third straight edition
Jerrold Mangliwan (para athletics)
- finished eighth in the men’s 400m T52
- missed the cut for the final of the men’s 100m T52
- competed in the Paralympics for the third straight edition
Allain Ganapin (para taekwondo)
- started his campaign in the men’s -80kg K44 by beating Hadi Hassanzada of the Refugee Paralympic Team in the round of 32
- ended his run after losing to Abulfaz Abuzarli of Azerbaijan in the round of 16
- debuted in the Games after being ruled out of the Tokyo Paralympics due to a positive coronavirus test
Agustina Bantiloc (para archery)
- got seeded last out of the 28 athletes in the ranking round of the women’s individual compound open
- lost to world No. 3 Jane Karla Gogel of Brazil in the 1/16 elimination
- became the first para archer to represent the Philippines in the Paralympics
